The often-repeated claim that more than 200 people witnessed the Westall event should be understood carefully. What memory and viewing conditions can explain
The inconsistencies do not necessarily imply that witnesses fabricated their experiences. Instead, they illustrate well-known characteristics of eyewitness observation.
Many students were young teenagers viewing a distant, largely featureless object against a bright daytime sky. Under those conditions, judging size, distance and speed is inherently difficult. Small changes in viewing angle can also make an object appear disc-shaped from one perspective and elongated from another.
