Introduction
The terrain of the Eyre Highway is often imagined as perfectly flat, but that is misleading. Around the section between Madura, Mundrabilla and Eucla, the highway crosses escarpments, shallow basins, ridges and long gradients that can conceal vehicles while leaving their lights visible. During the Knowles family’s January 1988 encounter, these landscape features may have amplified the effects of darkness and unusual atmospheric conditions, making ordinary headlights appear detached from the road, suspended in the air or capable of sudden jumps. The road gradients between Madura and Eucla
Although much of the Nullarbor is remarkably open, the Eyre Highway west of the South Australian border is not a featureless plain. Travelling east from Madura, the road descends from the elevated Nullarbor plateau through Madura Pass onto the lower Roe Plains before gradually climbing again towards Eucla. Between these points lies an area known locally as “The Basin”, bordered by hills to the north and changing elevations along the highway. These changes matter because drivers rarely see an entire stretch of road at once. Instead, long rises and shallow dips repeatedly hide approaching traffic below the skyline. At night, the lack of buildings, trees and illuminated landmarks removes many of the visual cues that normally help drivers judge distance and height.
For someone travelling before dawn, as the Knowles family were, the landscape offers little reference beyond the roadway itself. A distant light appearing above a ridge can therefore seem disconnected from any vehicle, particularly if the body of the vehicle remains concealed behind a crest or within a shallow depression.
How hidden vehicles produce detached lights
One of the most important terrain effects is selective visibility. A vehicle does not need to disappear completely for its lights to appear mysterious. Instead, the road itself can hide the lower portion of the approaching vehicle while the headlamps remain visible.
This produces several visual impressions that closely resemble descriptions reported during the early stages of the Knowles sighting:
- headlights appear to float above the horizon rather than sit on the road;
- the light seems isolated because the vehicle body cannot be seen;
- as the vehicle climbs or descends a gradient, the lights appear to rise or sink independently;
- changing road elevation can briefly extinguish the lights before they suddenly return.
These effects become even more convincing when combined with a temperature inversion. Retired meteorologist A. T. Brunt argued that the inversion present that morning could have refracted distant headlights over the horizon, while the highway’s topography determined when those lights were visible and when they disappeared behind intervening ground. Why bends and ridges create apparent jumps
The Knowles family described the light as disappearing, reappearing and apparently “jumping” across the landscape. Terrain offers one plausible contribution to this impression.
Even relatively gentle bends alter the observer’s viewing angle. As a moving car rounds a curve or crests a rise, the line of sight to a distant vehicle changes rapidly. The headlights may:
- emerge from behind a ridge;
- vanish as the road alignment shifts;
- reappear several degrees away from their previous position;
- seem to move sideways despite the source vehicle continuing normally.
To observers concentrating on a single bright light in an otherwise dark landscape, these abrupt changes can resemble rapid manoeuvres by the light itself rather than ordinary changes in perspective.
Because both vehicles are moving, the geometry changes continuously. Small differences in elevation become magnified over many kilometres, making ordinary traffic appear to perform impossible movements when viewed without surrounding visual references.
Darkness removed the usual depth cues
The remote Western Australian section of the Eyre Highway offers exceptionally dark skies and extremely sparse roadside lighting. While this makes astronomical viewing spectacular, it also deprives drivers of familiar depth cues.
In towns or on busier roads, drivers unconsciously judge the position of headlights by comparing them with streetlights, buildings, trees, signs and other vehicles. On the Nullarbor, those comparisons are largely absent.
As a result:
- estimating distance becomes much harder;
- isolated lights often appear larger than they really are;
- apparent height above the ground becomes difficult to judge;
- brightness is easily mistaken for proximity.
These psychological effects are well documented in night-driving research and become particularly important in remote environments where a single bright source dominates an observer’s field of view. Those reported experiences remain separate parts of the case and have been interpreted in different ways by believers and sceptics alike. Why terrain remains an important part of the Nullarbor explanation
The Eyre Highway’s landscape is often simplified into the image of an endless flat road, but the section surrounding the Knowles sighting is more varied than that stereotype suggests.
