Introduction
The alleged Kettering landing of February 1976 is one of Tasmania’s best-known close-range UFO reports because it combined two elements that investigators often regard as more significant than a distant light in the sky: a detailed witness account and a claimed physical trace on the ground. According to the witness, a glowing dome-shaped object landed near Little Oyster Cove before departing with a rising humming sound. The following morning he reported finding a circular patch of scorched grass where the object had apparently rested.[NICAP]nicap.orgThe 1976 UFO ChronologyJanuary 23, 2017…
What makes the case noteworthy is not that the grass mark proved a landing, but that it was examined rather than simply accepted. Later testing failed to find evidence of unusual heating or ionising radiation, leaving the reported trace unexplained but far from confirmed as evidence of an extraordinary craft. Within Tasmania’s 1970s wave of sightings, the Kettering case therefore illustrates both the appeal and the limitations of alleged physical evidence.[NICAP]nicap.orgThe 1976 UFO ChronologyJanuary 23, 2017…
The witness’s account of the glowing object
The incident is generally dated to late February 1976, when a resident of the Kettering area was reportedly awakened during the early hours by his child crying. Looking towards Little Oyster Cove, he saw an intense glow and initially feared an aircraft accident. Walking towards the shoreline, he claimed to have approached within roughly 25 metres of a stationary object.[Australian Online Casinos]auforn.comAustralian Online Casinos Bill Chalker ArchiveAustralian Online Casinos Bill Chalker Archive
The object was described as dome-shaped with a metallic appearance and illuminated windows around its upper section. The witness reported hearing a humming sound resembling an electric motor. Looking through the windows, he believed he could see a tall cylindrical structure together with motionless grey forms that he later compared to seats or headrests. These interior observations have often been repeated in UFO literature, although they rest entirely on the testimony of a single observer.[NICAP]nicap.orgThe 1976 UFO ChronologyJanuary 23, 2017…
According to the account, the object lifted slowly from the ground before accelerating rapidly and climbing eastward at a steep angle. The entire encounter reportedly lasted between six and seven minutes. No independent eyewitnesses, photographs or official instrument records have been linked to the event.[NICAP]nicap.orgThe 1976 UFO ChronologyJanuary 23, 2017…
What was reported about the circular grass mark
The physical trace is the aspect that distinguishes Kettering from many other Tasmanian reports of the decade.
The witness stated that he returned to the location the following morning and found a circular area where rough grass appeared scorched. Later accounts say the affected grass died and was eventually replaced by tougher, greener growth, making the circle stand out against the surrounding vegetation when investigators visited the site. Estimates of the affected area are typically around six metres across.[Australian Online Casinos]auforn.comAustralian Online Casinos Bill Chalker ArchiveAustralian Online Casinos Bill Chalker Archive
The timing of the investigation is important. The Tasmanian UFO Investigation Centre (TUFOIC) did not learn of the incident until more than a year later, in April 1977. Soil samples were eventually collected in October 1977, meaning scientific examination occurred long after the original condition of the site had changed through weather, seasonal growth and normal environmental processes.[NICAP]nicap.orgThe 1976 UFO ChronologyJanuary 23, 2017…
Because the alleged landing site was not documented immediately after the event, investigators had to rely heavily on the witness’s recollection and on the appearance of vegetation many months later rather than on contemporaneous measurements.
Why the grass trace did not become decisive evidence
Unlike many reported landing traces, the Kettering site was subjected to laboratory testing rather than relying only on visual impressions.
The principal analysis used thermoluminescence testing of soil and mineral particles. This technique can indicate whether soil has experienced substantial heating or significant exposure to ionising radiation. According to the published results by Dr Geoff Stevens, samples taken from inside and outside the reported circle showed no significant systematic differences. The testing found no evidence that the soil had been subjected to large doses of ionising radiation. It also indicated that the soil had not been heated to temperatures expected if an intense heat source had rested on the ground.[NICAP]nicap.orgThe 1976 UFO ChronologyJanuary 23, 2017…
These findings are important because they limit what can reasonably be claimed from the grass mark. If the vegetation had been damaged by a conventional fire or by a powerful source of heat, measurable changes in the soil might have been expected. Likewise, the tests found no indication of unusually high radiation exposure.
At the same time, negative laboratory results do not identify what actually caused the vegetation changes. The testing simply failed to confirm the more dramatic explanations that later became associated with the case.[NICAP]nicap.orgThe 1976 UFO ChronologyJanuary 23, 2017…
Alternative causes and gaps in the surviving investigation
The strongest reason for caution is that the grass mark was never independently documented at the moment it was supposedly created.
Several uncertainties remain:
- the event depended on a single witness rather than multiple independent observers;
- investigators reached the site many months after the reported landing;
- no contemporaneous photographs of a freshly scorched circle are known from the original investigation;
- no official police, aviation or scientific investigation corroborated the reported landing itself.[NICAP]nicap.orgThe 1976 UFO ChronologyJanuary 23, 2017…
Environmental explanations also cannot be excluded. Vegetation can change colour or die for many reasons, including disease, local soil conditions, salt exposure, fungal activity, drought stress or ordinary seasonal variation. Because the site was not examined immediately, it is difficult to separate any original disturbance from natural changes that occurred over the following year.
Equally, the absence of evidence for unusual heating or radiation does not automatically disprove the witness’s experience. It simply means that the claimed physical trace did not provide independent confirmation of an extraordinary event.
Why the Kettering case still matters
Within Tasmania’s 1970s sighting wave, Kettering remains significant because it sits between two categories of UFO report. It is more substantial than a distant light seen briefly in the night sky because it includes a close-range narrative and an alleged landing trace. Yet it falls well short of becoming a confirmed physical case because the available scientific examination failed to detect the kinds of anomalies that would strongly support an extraordinary explanation.[NICAP]nicap.orgThe 1976 UFO ChronologyJanuary 23, 2017…
For that reason, the Kettering grass mark is best understood as an unresolved claim rather than verified evidence. It illustrates why physical traces attract lasting attention in UFO research while also showing how delayed investigation, limited documentation and inconclusive testing can leave even a memorable case suspended between witness testimony and scientific uncertainty.
