Why the Bridgetown UFO Case Stayed Unresolved

Introduction
The Bridgetown sighting of November 1951 occupies a distinctive place in Western Australia’s UFO history because it is one of the earliest surviving cases preserved in the Western Australian Police UFO files. What Charles Bolton reported near Bridgetown
On the night of 28 November 1951, Charles Aubrey Bolton, a Lands Department inspector, was camping near Chowerup, about 37 miles (roughly 60 kilometres) east of Bridgetown. According to the police report, Bolton described several unusual features:
- an object that appeared to have no wings;
- an orange light on the left (port) side;
- a green light near the front on the right side;
- five illuminated porthole-like openings glowing orange;
- movement from east to west at a speed comparable to a jet aircraft;

The description is notable because it was recorded only days after the event, reducing the likelihood that it had become embellished through repeated retelling. At the same time, every important estimate—altitude, speed, size and distance—depended entirely on Bolton’s visual impressions, with no independent measurements available.
How police and the RAAF responded
The Bridgetown report illustrates how unusual aerial sightings were handled in Western Australia during the early Cold War. Local police did not dismiss the account outright. The RAAF’s response is one of the most significant aspects of the case. During the early 1950s, unidentified aerial reports could potentially relate to aircraft, military activity or other matters affecting national security. - the precise time and location;
- whether the object appeared self-illuminated;
- changes in direction or altitude;
- whether it maintained a straight course;

These questions demonstrate that investigators were attempting to gather evidence that could support or eliminate conventional explanations rather than simply accepting the witness’s interpretation.
Why the missing questionnaire limits the case
The Bridgetown incident remains unresolved largely because the surviving archival record is incomplete.
Police correspondence from January 1952 indicates that Bolton completed the requested questionnaire. However, the version preserved in the State Records Office contains the printed questions but none of the witness’s answers. That missing information creates several important gaps.
Without Bolton’s detailed responses, investigators today cannot determine:
- exactly how long the object remained visible;
- whether its apparent speed changed during observation;
- whether atmospheric conditions could have influenced perception;
- whether any stars, planets or aircraft were considered at the time;

These are precisely the kinds of details modern investigators use when assessing historical sightings. Their absence means that the original narrative cannot be tested against astronomical data, aviation records or meteorological conditions with the confidence that a complete report would allow.
The surviving paperwork therefore documents an investigation that began seriously but cannot show how it ended.
What the case tells us about the WA Police UFO files
The Bridgetown report illustrates both the strengths and weaknesses of the Western Australian Police archive.
On the positive side, the file demonstrates that police documented unusual reports carefully, identified witnesses, preserved dates and locations, and communicated with the RAAF when they considered a case significant. Why the Bridgetown case remains unresolved
More than seventy years later, there is no convincing evidence that identifies what Charles Bolton observed. Equally, there is no evidence that the RAAF confirmed an extraordinary object.
The case survives because contemporaneous officials regarded it as credible enough to investigate, not because they verified Bolton’s interpretation. The witness appears to have been treated as reliable, but witness reliability is different from objective identification. A sincere observer can still misjudge distance, size, speed or the nature of an unfamiliar object seen at night.
For historians of Western Australia’s UFO records, that distinction is what makes the Bridgetown incident significant. It is one of the state’s earliest documented official UFO investigations, yet its most important evidential document—the completed questionnaire that might have resolved key uncertainties—is missing.
