Introduction
The celebrated claim that Woomera radar tracked an object at approximately 3,600 mph on 5 May 1954 sounds highly precise, but the surviving evidence is much less exact than the figure suggests. The reported speed was not read directly from the radar. Instead, it was calculated by a radar operator from an estimated distance travelled over a measured time interval. Because the original radar plot, calibration records and supporting technical documentation have not survived in the publicly available files, later researchers cannot independently verify either the measurement or the assumptions behind it. The original statement by Staff Sergeant George Trotter reported that an unidentified target appeared on an AA No. 4 Mk. 6 anti-aircraft radar at roughly 60,000 yards, followed a curved path over the radar position and then moved eastwards. Trotter wrote that he timed the target over 15,000 yards in ten seconds, producing a calculated speed of approximately 3,600 mph. The wording of the statement is significant. It does not say that the radar automatically displayed a speed. Instead, it records the operator’s own calculation from two quantities:
- an estimated distance travelled (15,000 yards);
- a manually timed interval of ten seconds.
That distinction matters because any uncertainty in either figure directly affects the resulting speed estimate. A small timing error or uncertainty in precisely where the target entered and left the measured segment would noticeably change the calculated velocity.
The reported altitude estimate was similarly indirect. The radar did not produce a direct altitude readout. How the Speed and Height Figures Were Derived
The impressive numerical values often quoted in later UFO literature come from straightforward geometry rather than from a dedicated tracking computer.
For the speed estimate, the operator:
- estimated that the target crossed approximately 15,000 yards;
- timed that movement at ten seconds;
- converted the resulting ground speed into miles per hour.
Likewise, the altitude estimate rested on the characteristics of the AA No. 4 Mk. 6 radar. The report reasoned that because the target remained on the radar’s high beam at long range, it must have been above roughly 60,000 feet. Neither calculation was inherently unreasonable for an experienced radar operator. However, both depended upon assumptions that modern researchers cannot independently check because the underlying technical records have not survived.
Radar Effects That Can Mimic Very Fast Targets
A radar return is not automatically equivalent to a solid object travelling exactly as the display appears to show. Radar operators, particularly during the 1950s, were familiar with a variety of effects capable of producing unusual tracks.
Possible mechanisms include:
- Anomalous propagation. Unusual atmospheric layers can bend radar beams, causing reflections from unexpected locations or producing targets that appear to move irregularly.
- Ground or structural reflections. Buildings, terrain and other fixed objects can generate misleading echoes under particular conditions.
- Intermittent returns. If a target appears briefly, disappears and reappears, an operator may naturally connect separate echoes into a continuous path that exaggerates apparent speed.
- Beam geometry. Radar measures range and bearing rather than a complete three-dimensional trajectory. Estimating altitude and true velocity requires assumptions about where the target sits within the beam.
None of these possibilities proves that the Woomera target was spurious. Equally, none can be ruled out because the original technical evidence needed to reconstruct the radar conditions is no longer available. Why the Missing Records Matter
The greatest limitation on assessing the 3,600 mph claim is not the witness but the incomplete archive.
Researchers have identified several important items that are absent from the surviving file:
- the radar diagram referred to in Trotter’s statement;
- any radar photographs or film;
- calibration records for the radar set;
- detailed tracking logs;
- engineering data confirming the radar’s operating state during the observation;
- documentation allowing independent reconstruction of the calculated track.
Keith Basterfield noted that the report explicitly refers to a diagram on the “next page”, but that diagram was not present in the archival file examined. This absence is especially important because radar interpretation depends heavily on context. Modern analysts would normally want to compare the unknown return with known aircraft tracks, weather conditions, equipment performance and other simultaneous observations. Those supporting records either have not survived or have not been located in publicly available archives.
How Historians Assess the Radar Claim Today
Most careful historians neither dismiss the radar report nor accept the famous speed figure uncritically.
Several aspects strengthen the report:
- it was written immediately after the event rather than decades later;
- the operator was trained to use military radar equipment;
- another serviceman was said to have witnessed the radar return;

- the altitude estimate depended on assumptions about beam geometry;
- the original plotting material is missing;

These competing factors explain why the case continues to attract attention. The documentation is stronger than many UFO reports because it originated within a military testing environment, yet it falls short of the evidential standard needed to confirm that radar tracked an object moving at 3,600 mph.
What the Radar Track Really Tells Us
The lasting significance of the Woomera radar report is not that it proves an extraordinary craft crossed South Australia at hypersonic speed. Rather, it shows that trained personnel operating sophisticated equipment encountered an unidentified radar return they considered unusual enough to document formally.
The famous figure of 3,600 mph should therefore be understood as an historical calculation made by the original operator under the conditions of the day. Because the supporting radar plot, calibration information and detailed tracking records are missing, that calculation cannot now be independently validated or falsified.
