Radar often gives aviation cases an aura of certainty, yet radar interpretation is itself a specialised discipline. New South Wales provides examples at both ends of the spectrum. By contrast, later military investigations around RAAF Base Williamtown demonstrated how apparently mysterious radar targets could arise from technical causes. During the well-known 1983 incident, interceptor aircraft were scrambled after unusual radar contacts appeared, but investigators ultimately attributed the phenomenon to radar interference known colloquially as “running rabbits”. That episode illustrates why aviation investigators avoid treating radar alone as definitive proof.
Taken together, these cases show why aviation evidence deserves careful attention while also demonstrating that unexplained radar contacts can have multiple causes.
How the coast changes what witnesses think they see
New South Wales’ coastline is an important but often overlooked reason for repeated UFO reports around airfields.
Over open water there are few visual references for judging distance or speed. A bright aircraft far offshore may appear much closer than it really is. Lights approaching directly towards an observer show very little sideways movement, creating the impression of hovering before suddenly accelerating as the aircraft changes course.
Near the horizon, atmospheric refraction and layers of warm and cool air can alter the apparent position and brightness of lights. Reflections from the sea can exaggerate the effect further. These conditions can make ordinary aircraft appear to:
- stop in mid-air;
- move erratically;
- split into multiple lights;
- brighten or fade suddenly;
- disappear abruptly into haze.

Why airfields become long-term sighting hotspots
Once an airport or defence base becomes associated with famous UFO stories, later reports naturally attract more attention. This creates a historical clustering effect.
The location itself is not necessarily producing unexplained phenomena. Instead, several influences reinforce one another:
- people near airfields spend more time looking at the sky;
- aviation activity produces more unusual-looking lights and manoeuvres;
- local media are more likely to report sightings near well-known military facilities;
- witnesses often interpret later observations through the area’s existing reputation.
This process helps explain why places such as Nowra and Williamtown recur throughout New South Wales UFO literature even though individual incidents vary greatly in quality and credibility.
What this pattern tells us about NSW UFO history
The concentration of UFO reports around New South Wales airfields reflects observation conditions as much as unexplained phenomena. Busy aviation corridors, trained witnesses, formal reporting procedures and complex coastal flying environments all increase the likelihood that unusual aerial events will be noticed and documented.
For historians and investigators, this makes aviation cases especially valuable. They often contain richer evidence than ordinary civilian reports, including operational records, radio communications and occasionally radar data. At the same time, the same environment produces many opportunities for misidentification, technical anomalies and perceptual errors. The result is not proof that airfields generate extraordinary phenomena, but a setting where both the strongest unresolved cases and the best conventional explanations are more likely to emerge.
