What Did Airport and Radar Records Really Prove?

Introduction
The Cressy sighting is often described as having been “checked with the airport” or even “cleared by radar”, but the surviving evidence is more limited than those phrases suggest. What the contemporary record shows is that Reverend Lionel Browning contacted the control tower at Western Junction Airport shortly after the observation and was told that no known aircraft were operating in the relevant area. That is an important piece of evidence because it shows the sighting was reported immediately. However, it is not the same as proof that no aircraft could have been present, nor does it demonstrate that radar conclusively ruled out every possible explanation. The distinction matters because later retellings have sometimes expanded a relatively narrow aviation check into a broader claim that official radar confirmed an unidentified object, something the surviving documentation does not support.[UFO Transparency]ufotransparency.comOpen source on ufotransparency.com.
Browning’s call to Western Junction
One of the strongest features of the Cressy case is that Browning acted promptly. After the reported object disappeared into the rain squall, he telephoned the control tower at Western Junction Airport, now Launceston Airport, to ask whether any aircraft were known to be operating in the area. According to both Browning’s later statements and the RAAF file, the response was that there were no known aircraft matching what he had observed.[UFO Transparency]ufotransparency.comOpen source on ufotransparency.com.
That telephone call has evidential value because it fixes the report close to the time of the event rather than years afterwards. It also shows that Browning himself initially considered a conventional aviation explanation. His first instinct was not that he had witnessed an extraordinary craft, but to ask whether an aircraft might account for what he had seen.[UFO Transparency]ufotransparency.comOpen source on ufotransparency.com.
The surviving records, however, do not preserve a detailed transcript of the conversation with air traffic control. They do not identify exactly which flight records were consulted, what level of air traffic information was available to controllers at that moment, or whether every possible category of aircraft was capable of being checked in real time. Those gaps limit what historians can safely conclude from the exchange.[UFO Transparency]ufotransparency.comOpen source on ufotransparency.com.
What “no known aircraft” actually means
The phrase “no known aircraft” is narrower than many readers assume.
In aviation practice, it generally means that the controller had no knowledge of an aircraft expected or recorded in the relevant airspace at the time. It does not automatically establish that:
- every aircraft in the region had been positively accounted for;
- every military, private or low-level flight had been detected;
- an unidentified radar target had been ruled out; or
- the witness could not have misjudged the distance or appearance of a conventional object.
For the Cressy case, the preserved documentation supports only the limited proposition that Western Junction had no known aircraft corresponding to Browning’s report. It does not expand that finding into a comprehensive exclusion of every aviation possibility.[UFO Transparency]ufotransparency.comOpen source on ufotransparency.com.
This distinction is especially important because the observation occurred near rain showers and broken cloud around sunset. Atmospheric conditions of that kind complicate estimates of distance, altitude and speed, meaning that even a sincere observer may misinterpret how far away an object actually is. The RAAF accepted the Brownings as honest witnesses without claiming that every aspect of their interpretation had therefore been confirmed.[UFO Transparency]ufotransparency.comOpen source on ufotransparency.com.
Why absent radar evidence is not a radar disproof
A common misunderstanding is that because no radar evidence survives, radar must have shown nothing unusual. The available record does not justify that conclusion.
Equally, it does not justify the opposite claim that radar detected the reported object. The surviving RAAF correspondence contains no preserved radar plot, radar log or technical analysis demonstrating that an unidentified target was tracked during the incident. Nor does it include documentation stating that radar coverage conclusively excluded the presence of an aircraft.[UFO Transparency]ufotransparency.comOpen source on ufotransparency.com.
That absence of documentation leaves three separate possibilities:
- radar information may never have been collected for the incident;
- any relevant radar information may not have been preserved in the surviving file; or
- radar was simply not capable of providing decisive evidence for this particular observation.
The surviving archive does not distinguish between those possibilities. As a result, historians cannot responsibly claim either “radar confirmed the UFO” or “radar proved nothing was there.” Both statements go beyond what the documentary record supports.[UFO Transparency]ufotransparency.comOpen source on ufotransparency.com.
What the evidence gap tells us
The aviation checks strengthen one aspect of the Cressy case while leaving another unresolved.
They strengthen it because Browning reported the sighting immediately, sought an ordinary explanation first, and received an answer indicating that no known aircraft matched the report. Those features tend to support the sincerity and contemporaneous nature of his account.[UFO Transparency]ufotransparency.comOpen source on ufotransparency.com.
At the same time, the evidence gap remains significant. The case lacks preserved radar data, photographs, independent instrumental confirmation or multiple verified observations from different locations. The RAAF investigation ultimately concluded that the Brownings were reliable and genuinely believed they had seen real objects, but it stopped short of identifying what those objects actually were.[UFO Transparency]ufotransparency.comOpen source on ufotransparency.com.
Within Tasmania’s UFO history, this is an important distinction. The Cressy sighting is often remembered as an officially investigated case, yet the official investigation produced a careful assessment of witness credibility rather than technical confirmation of an unidentified craft. The airport inquiry and the absence of documented radar evidence illustrate why the incident remains unresolved: the available aviation records narrow some explanations but do not provide the decisive proof that later retellings have sometimes implied.[UFO Transparency]ufotransparency.comOpen source on ufotransparency.com.
