Introduction
The reports of other unusual lights on the night of the Knowles family encounter are often presented as independent confirmation that something extraordinary happened over the Nullarbor. A closer look shows a more limited picture. There is credible evidence that at least one independent witness, truck driver Graham Henley, reported seeing an unusual light in the same area at roughly the relevant time. There are also claims that a tuna fishing boat crew observed an unidentified light later that night. However, neither account independently confirms the central claim that an unknown craft physically lifted or attacked the Knowles family’s car. Instead, they support only the narrower proposition that unusual lights may have been visible in the region.
This distinction matters because independent corroboration is strongest when separate witnesses describe the same event from different perspectives without influencing one another. In the Knowles case, the additional reports fall well short of that standard.
What truck driver Graham Henley reported
The strongest independent witness was truck driver Graham Henley, who was travelling ahead of the Knowles family’s car on the Eyre Highway. According to both contemporary reporting and later investigations, Henley said he noticed a bright light in his rear-view mirror above or near the headlights of the car following him. Henley’s account is important because it was not simply a repetition of the family’s story. He was in a separate vehicle and observed something before speaking to them. That makes his testimony genuinely independent in a way that the four members of the Knowles family cannot be, since they experienced the event together.
Even so, the limits of his evidence are equally important.
Henley did not report seeing:
- a craft descend onto the Knowles’ vehicle;
- the car lifted from the highway;
- violent shaking or physical contact;
- an object towing or carrying the vehicle.
Instead, he described a bright light apparently associated with the distant car behind him. At an estimated distance of around 10 to 15 kilometres, he was far too far away to observe detailed events even if they occurred. Henley also made later comments about soot on the vehicle, an electrical smell and dents in the roof after meeting the family at the roadhouse. Those observations were made after the alleged encounter and cannot establish how the damage or residue originated. Why the tuna-boat sighting was weak corroboration
Another frequently cited piece of supporting evidence is a report from the crew of a tuna fishing boat operating off the southern coast.
According to UFO literature, several crew members reported seeing an unusual light or hovering object over the sea later that same night. Because the timing broadly overlapped with the Knowles incident, the sighting has often been presented as evidence that the same object travelled from the highway to the coast.
That connection is highly speculative.
There is no evidence that the boat crew observed the Knowles encounter itself or even the same object. The sightings occurred in different locations, involved different viewing conditions and lacked any continuous observation linking one event to the other. Why multiple light sightings do not necessarily describe one event
One reason the Knowles case acquired such a powerful reputation is that later retellings combined several separate reports into a single narrative of a “Nullarbor UFO wave”.
From an evidential perspective, however, this approach creates problems.
Independent sightings only reinforce one another when they can reasonably be shown to involve the same phenomenon. That normally requires evidence such as:
- closely matching times;
- compatible locations and viewing directions;
- consistent descriptions;
- a plausible continuous path between observations.
The Knowles-related reports do not satisfy these criteria. The truck driver’s light could potentially have been the same phenomenon the family initially saw, but his observation cannot establish what happened afterwards. The tuna-boat report is even more disconnected, lacking any demonstrable link beyond occurring on the same night.

What independent evidence would have been needed
Had stronger corroboration existed, the assessment of the Knowles encounter might look very different.
Evidence that would have substantially strengthened the case would include:
- several independent motorists reporting the same close-range event from different positions;
- police officers or road users arriving while the object remained present;
- radar or aviation records showing an unidentified low-level target;
- time-stamped photographs or video from separate observers;
- physical traces clearly linked to the reported object rather than to ordinary vehicle wear or environmental contamination.
None of this evidence emerged despite the considerable publicity surrounding the case. Although police accepted that the family appeared genuinely frightened, no independent witness confirmed the alleged lifting of the vehicle, and no official record demonstrated the presence of an unknown craft over the highway.
The balance of the evidence
The reports from Graham Henley and the alleged tuna-boat sighting remain relevant because they show that the Knowles family were not the only people to report unusual lights associated with the wider Nullarbor region. They therefore make it harder to dismiss the entire episode as a simple invention by one family.
At the same time, their evidential value is often overstated. Henley’s observation independently supports the existence of an unusual distant light, not the claim that a craft physically interacted with the family’s car. The tuna-boat report is even weaker because it cannot be securely connected to the highway incident at all.
For historians of Western Australia’s UFO history, these additional witnesses modestly strengthen the claim that something unusual may have been visible that night, but they do not independently verify the most extraordinary elements of the Knowles family’s account. The central claim—that an unidentified craft lifted and attacked the vehicle—still rests almost entirely on the testimony of the four occupants inside the car.
