Introduction

The surviving record of Canberra’s May 1950 “flying saucer” report has never formed a perfectly consistent story. Some articles presented Captain Gordon Savage as convinced that the object was the planet Venus, while others reported that both pilots had rejected that explanation. At the same time, astronomers at Mount Stromlo questioned whether Venus could account for what had been described, yet they also lacked enough observational detail to identify a better alternative. Same-day headlines that contradicted each other

One reason the case has remained contested is that contemporary reporting was inconsistent from the beginning. Newspapers did not simply emphasise different aspects of the same story—they sometimes reported directly opposing conclusions.

Several papers published on 27 May 1950 quoted Captain Gordon Savage as saying that, after initially wondering whether the light might even have been an unidentified aircraft, he had become convinced that the alternating red and white light was caused by Venus rising through atmospheric conditions near the eastern horizon. What Mount Stromlo astronomers questioned

The intervention of astronomers added another layer of uncertainty rather than resolving the matter outright.

Officials at the Commonwealth Observatory on Mount Stromlo argued that Venus had only just risen above the eastern horizon at the reported time. On that basis, they questioned whether it could have appeared to be well above the aircraft, as some newspaper descriptions implied. Contemporary reports also quoted Government Astronomer Richard Woolley as saying that an object displaying a distinctly red colour could not simply be identified as Venus or Jupiter on that evidence alone. Importantly, these objections were directed at the reported appearance rather than proving that an unknown object had been present. Astronomers were evaluating second-hand descriptions, not observing the light themselves from the aircraft’s position. Their reservations therefore weakened an overconfident Venus identification without establishing a competing explanation.

Which missing records prevent a final reconstruction

Even today, several important pieces of evidence are missing or incomplete, preventing a definitive reconstruction of the event.

The surviving documentation has significant gaps:

• No complete meteorological reconstruction. • Limited official investigation records. Because these records are incomplete, modern researchers cannot test every reported detail against the actual geometry of Venus, cloud layers and aircraft movement.

Why historians usually regard the Venus explanation as the best fit

Despite the unresolved inconsistencies, most later assessments still regard Venus as the most plausible explanation.

Several features match well-known observational effects. A brilliant planet seen low above the horizon can appear to flash between white and reddish colours because of atmospheric refraction. From a moving aircraft at night, with few visual reference points, a stationary celestial object can also appear to pace the aircraft or change apparent height as the aircraft climbs or turns. At the same time, the Mount Stromlo comments serve as an important reminder that an explanation need not account perfectly for every reported detail. The case illustrates the difference between a best-supported explanation and a complete reconstruction. The available evidence points towards a misidentified astronomical object, but conflicting press reports, uncertainties over the exact weather conditions and the absence of comprehensive flight records mean that historians cannot recreate every aspect of what the crew believed they saw.

Within the broader history of UFO reports in the Australian Capital Territory, this is why the Canberra incident remains noteworthy. It is neither an unexplained mystery nor a case closed beyond dispute.
