The 24-minute invisible target report
On 8 October 1952, a radar operator at Woomera acquired a target while tracking an aircraft. According to the official report, the return had a signal-to-noise ratio of at least five to one, comparable to that expected from a large aircraft. Why officials suspected ice or cloud effects
The most revealing aspect of the case is not the radar track itself but the official commentary attached to it.
The weather report recorded fine conditions, with five-eighths high cloud around 25,000 feet, temperatures of about 84°F (29°C) and strong northerly winds. More significantly, officials noted that brief snowfall occurred the following morning, an unusual meteorological event for the area. Modern readers should treat one frequently repeated phrase in the archival summary with care. The report mentions the possibility of a “neutron cloud”, but there is no evidence that investigators believed an exotic physical phenomenon had actually been detected. Historians generally interpret the comment as reflecting the technical language and uncertainty of the period rather than as support for an extraordinary explanation. From a radar perspective, that cautious approach is understandable. Early 1950s military radar systems could produce strong returns from meteorological phenomena under certain atmospheric conditions. Temperature inversions, precipitation, ice crystals and anomalous propagation could all generate misleading echoes or distort the apparent position and movement of targets.
