Seers and Queensland’s investigation culture

Stan Seers emerged during a period when Queensland’s civilian UFO groups sought to conduct investigations that they believed official agencies abandoned too quickly. Rather than simply collecting sighting reports, the Queensland Flying Saucer Research Bureau encouraged site visits, witness interviews, photography and laboratory testing where possible. The Tully case became the Bureau’s defining investigation. After banana farmer George Pedley reported seeing a grey, saucer-shaped object rise from Horseshoe Lagoon in January 1966, Seers treated the case as one that deserved sustained attention rather than a brief response. Following the discovery of the original reed formation, Seers arranged for Albert Pennisi to collect samples of reeds, mud and water from both the flattened area and nearby unaffected vegetation. The results were mixed.

These findings did not support claims of exotic physical effects. However, Seers argued that they also failed to resolve the central question of how the reeds had become submerged in such a distinctive circular pattern in the first place.

This distinction became the foundation of his criticism. In his view, laboratory analysis explained the condition of the plants after the event but not the mechanism that produced the “nest”. Why Seers rejected the RAAF explanation

The RAAF investigation concluded that the flattened reeds most likely resulted from a natural atmospheric phenomenon, often described as a small whirlwind or waterspout, and that the brown reeds had simply died after natural submersion. Seers did not accept that conclusion as sufficient.

His principal objections were practical rather than purely ideological:

• Timing of the reed damage. The Bureau argued that local observations suggested the reeds had browned more quickly than expected if ordinary flooding alone were responsible. • Consistency with witness testimony. Seers regarded George Pedley as a credible observer who consistently maintained that he saw an object rise from the lagoon before discovering the flattened reeds. Importantly, these arguments did not amount to proof that a UFO caused the formation. They were criticisms of what Seers considered an incomplete natural explanation.

Where advocacy overtook firm evidence

The same qualities that made Seers an energetic investigator also illustrate the limits of civilian UFO research.

His Bureau preserved interviews, photographs and observations that might otherwise have disappeared. At the same time, Seers increasingly interpreted new reed formations around Horseshoe Lagoon as supporting the original mystery. Later reports described additional “saucer nests” over subsequent years, and Seers documented these carefully. Yet most of these later events lacked the combination of independent witnesses, police involvement and immediate official examination that characterised the original 1966 case. His reasoning also reflected a common pattern in civilian ufology: unresolved questions were often treated as reasons to keep extraordinary possibilities open rather than as evidence that no firm conclusion could yet be reached. From a sceptical perspective, gaps in the RAAF explanation did not automatically support the UFO interpretation. How Seers shaped the memory of the Tully case

Seers’ lasting influence lies less in overturning the official explanation than in ensuring that competing interpretations survived.

Without the Queensland Flying Saucer Research Bureau’s newsletters, photographs and continuing contact with local witnesses, much of the post-1966 history of the Tully site would probably have been lost.
