Introduction
The surviving records from Woomera’s 5 May 1954 incident do not show that the radar detection and binocular sighting can be confidently treated as the same event. Although official correspondence described the two reports as “corroborative”, the witness statements record observations approximately 45 minutes apart. That discrepancy is the central weakness in claims that the case represents a single, radar-confirmed unidentified object. Rather than disproving either witness, the timing gap leaves open two possibilities: that both men observed the same phenomenon but recorded approximate times, or that two separate events later became linked in official handling. What Trotter and Baker each reported
The two surviving witness statements were written within days of the incident and describe different methods of observation.
Staff Sergeant George Trotter, operating an AA No. 4 Mk. 6 radar, reported that at about 4.00 pm an unidentified target appeared on the radar’s high beam roughly north of the station at about 60,000 yards. He described the return following a curved path over the radar position before departing eastwards. Timing the target over 15,000 yards in ten seconds produced the frequently quoted estimated speed of about 3,600 mph. Sydney Baker, a Vickers-Armstrong employee observing a Canberra bomber trial through binoculars, filed a separate report dated the following day. His statement places his observation at approximately 4.45 pm. Baker described a perfectly circular, dark grey object which appeared to cross towards the Canberra before turning and seeming to hover above the aircraft’s flight path. Unable to determine its range or altitude, he avoided estimating its true size or speed. The covering letter sent by the Superintendent of the Long Range Weapons Establishment on 20 May 1954 stated that the two men had been about 300 yards apart and had provided “corroborative accounts”. Why the recorded times do not align
The strongest reason for caution is that the original documents themselves record different times.
Trotter’s radar statement specifies “about 1600”, while Baker’s visual report gives “approximately 1645 hours”. A difference of around 45 minutes is substantial for an event that appears to have lasted only minutes. Several explanations have been suggested over the years:
- Approximate recording. Both witnesses used approximate language rather than exact logged times. In military settings, however, a difference approaching three-quarters of an hour is larger than would normally be expected from casual rounding.
- Administrative summarisation. The covering letter may have grouped two unusual observations from the same afternoon because officials considered them related despite the timing difference.
- Later simplification. None of these possibilities can be demonstrated conclusively from the surviving evidence.
What evidence could have confirmed a single event
The timing issue might have been resolved had more of the original operational record survived.
The radar statement explicitly refers to a diagram on the next page, but researchers examining the archival file have noted that this diagram was not present. Other records that would have been particularly valuable include:
- radar plotting sheets or photographic radar displays;
- radar operator logbooks with precise timestamps;
- Canberra flight logs showing the aircraft’s exact position throughout the trial;
- statements from the Canberra crew;
- range-control communications or security logs recording the observation.
Had these materials survived together, investigators could have tested whether the radar target occupied the same position and time as Baker’s binocular observation. How the timing gap affects the case today
The mismatch does not invalidate either witness. Both men reported unusual observations independently and did so promptly after the event. Nor does it prove that the reports were unrelated. What it does mean is that one of the strongest claims often made about the Woomera case—that radar and visual observations unquestionably confirmed the same unidentified object—is not demonstrated by the surviving documentation.
This distinction matters because the evidential value of radar-visual cases depends on establishing that independent observations refer to the same target at the same time. In the Woomera incident, that chain of confirmation is incomplete.
