How temperature inversions bend ground-level light
Under normal conditions, light from a vehicle beyond the horizon cannot reach an observer because the Earth’s curvature blocks the direct line of sight. During a strong temperature inversion, however, a layer of cold, dense air becomes trapped beneath warmer air. In certain inversion conditions, light from distant headlights follows a gently curved path close to the ground rather than dispersing upwards into the night sky. - the light appears suspended above an otherwise empty horizon;

Pettigrew argued that many Min Min lights were ordinary ground-based light sources viewed through a temperature inversion. Rather than relying solely on theory, he attempted to reproduce the phenomenon under controlled field conditions.
In one widely reported experiment, Pettigrew deliberately drove a vehicle roughly 10 kilometres from observers at a campsite and repeatedly switched the headlights on and off while maintaining radio contact. Why the illusion can feel so convincing
The explanation works particularly well in remote country because the observer has almost no visual references.
Across the open plains of inland South Australia, the horizon may be little more than a dark line separating land from sky. Without nearby buildings, trees or terrain features, the brain struggles to estimate a light’s distance and height. Where the headlight explanation remains uncertain
Although the refraction hypothesis explains many reports, it does not resolve every case.
First, a suitable light source must exist. This perspective fits well with evidence-led investigation. When an isolated light is reported hovering over the outback, investigators first ask whether the sighting coincided with suitable weather, whether distant roads or vehicles lay beyond the visible horizon, and whether atmospheric refraction could plausibly have carried those lights to the observer. Only after testing those ordinary possibilities does it become reasonable to conclude that a report remains unexplained.
