What witnesses can do to test apparent pursuit
A convincing illusion is still an illusion, and there are practical ways to distinguish genuine movement from apparent movement.
If conditions are safe to do so, useful checks include:
- Avoid staring continuously at the light. Looking briefly away and then back reduces autokinesis.
- Compare the light with nearby stars, hills or other fixed landmarks instead of viewing it in isolation.
- Note whether the apparent motion changes after the road bends or climbs a hill.
- If the vehicle stops safely, observe whether the light continues its apparent movement or settles into a fixed position.
- Record the light with a stationary camera. Cameras generally do not reproduce autokinesis because they do not experience the eye movements that create the illusion, although they may still capture genuine atmospheric effects.
None of these tests proves that every unusual light has an ordinary explanation, but they help separate changes in human perception from changes in the light itself.
