The key difference is that the 1966 Tully incident involved a disturbed area of floating reeds in a lagoon rather than flattened cereal crops in an English field. Bower and Chorley never claimed to have created the Queensland formation. Keeping those questions separate avoids two common errors. One is to argue that because many later crop circles were human-made, Tully must also have been a hoax. The confession ultimately weakened sweeping claims that crop circles, as a class of phenomena, pointed towards extraterrestrial activity.
