How the search unfolded after contact ended

Valentich’s final transmission ended at approximately 7.12 pm after about six minutes of increasingly unusual radio exchanges with Melbourne Flight Service. When he failed to arrive at King Island, search-and-rescue procedures escalated rapidly.

The search involved aircraft, ships and assistance from civilian and military resources. Royal Australian Air Force aircraft joined civilian search aircraft, while vessels operating in Bass Strait were alerted to watch for wreckage or survivors. Why the last known position was uncertain

A common misconception is that investigators knew exactly where the aircraft disappeared. In reality, they only knew approximately where Valentich was during his final radio calls.

Several factors limited the precision of the search:

Why Bass Strait makes recovery difficult

Even if VH-DSJ entered the sea close to the estimated position, recovering it would have been far from straightforward.

Bass Strait is well known for:

  • rapidly changing weather;
  • strong tidal streams and complex currents;
  • rough seas capable of dispersing floating debris;
  • extensive areas of deep water;
  • uneven seabed that can conceal small wrecks.

A light aircraft such as a Cessna 182 can sink quickly after impact, leaving little material floating on the surface. If only limited debris escaped before the aircraft settled on the seabed, searchers could easily miss it, particularly using the search technology available in 1978. What the Flinders Island cowl flap can and cannot show

The only physical item ever seriously linked to Valentich’s aircraft emerged five years later.

An engine cowl flap washed ashore on Flinders Island in 1983. Investigators determined that it came from a Cessna 182 within a serial-number range that included VH-DSJ. Why the missing wreck matters to the UFO debate
