Introduction

Frederick William Birmingham did not use the word “ark” by accident. In his account of the 25 July 1868 vision at Parramatta, the term carried both a practical and a religious meaning. At first he thought he was looking at a beautiful vessel resembling something made for water. Only then did a disembodied voice tell him, “That’s a machine to go through the air.” Rather than replacing the word ark, Birmingham continued to use it throughout his narrative, suggesting that he saw the craft as both an engineered vehicle and a divinely significant object.[Project 1947]project1947.comProject 1947PROJECT 1947 - Bill Chalker - Australian Historical UFO Encounters…

This choice of language matters because it helps explain why the episode sits uneasily within modern UFO history. Birmingham’s experience was framed as a religious vision in which spiritual instruction, engineering ideas and biblical symbolism formed a single experience. Understanding why he called the craft an ark makes it easier to read the account in its original Victorian context rather than through the assumptions of the post-1947 flying-saucer era.

Biblical meaning in Birmingham’s account

The surviving memorandum shows that Birmingham first noticed what he called an “Ark” moving through the sky after seeing symbolic visions that included the head of the Bishop of Sydney. Looking at the object, he reportedly remarked that it was “a beautiful vessel”. The immediate reply from an unseen voice was not that he was mistaken, but that the vessel was “a machine to go through the air.”[Project 1947]project1947.comProject 1947PROJECT 1947 - Bill Chalker - Australian Historical UFO Encounters…

This exchange is revealing. Birmingham did not abandon the biblical label after learning that the object could fly. Instead, both descriptions remained true within his narrative:

  • it resembled a vessel, worthy of the name ark;
  • it functioned as an aerial machine;
  • it carried moral and spiritual meaning beyond its physical design.

Later in the manuscript Birmingham himself reflected on this dual meaning, writing that while he could understand the religious lesson urging him to live according to Christian teaching, the second part concerned “a machine to go through the air” or, in his own words, “the ark mentioned in the Book of Revelations.” Although modern biblical scholarship would distinguish between Noah’s Ark and the Ark of the Covenant, Birmingham’s wording shows that he interpreted the vision through the language of scripture familiar to him rather than through precise theological categories.[Project 1947]project1947.comProject 1947PROJECT 1947 - Bill Chalker - Australian Historical UFO Encounters…

The important point is not whether his biblical reference was technically exact, but that he believed the machine belonged within a sacred framework.

The spirit guide and divine instruction

Another reason Birmingham preferred the word ark is that the machine was introduced by a spirit, not by a human inventor or an extraterrestrial pilot.

The being accompanying him appeared, in his description, as a human-shaped spiritual figure wearing ordinary nineteenth-century clothing. It invited him aboard, led him through the structure and presented him with papers containing mathematical figures and engineering formulae. When Birmingham worried that the material was beyond him, the spirit insisted that understanding it was “absolutely necessary”.[Project 1947]project1947.comProject 1947PROJECT 1947 - Bill Chalker - Australian Historical UFO Encounters…

This sequence closely resembles Victorian accounts of spiritual revelation rather than modern reports of technological encounters. The important features are:

  • a supernatural guide;
  • instruction rather than experimentation;
  • hidden knowledge disclosed for a purpose;
  • a moral and religious framework surrounding technical information.

Birmingham believed that the experience unfolded under divine direction. Years afterwards he continued searching for engineering principles that might explain the machine, convinced that God had revealed a genuine possibility rather than an impossible fantasy. He even recorded later moments when he thought further clues had been spiritually communicated while studying engineering works.[Project 1947]project1947.comProject 1947PROJECT 1947 - Bill Chalker - Australian Historical UFO Encounters…

Seen in this light, the ark functioned less as an unknown vehicle than as a symbolic classroom where spiritual authority and mechanical knowledge met.

How religious language shaped the machine

Victorian readers often saw no contradiction between scientific progress and divine revelation. New technologies such as railways, telegraphs and steam engineering transformed everyday life, while spiritualism, biblical interpretation and religious visions remained influential across many parts of society.

Birmingham embodied this mixture. He was a practising engineer and surveyor, yet interpreted unusual experiences through Christian language. Instead of describing an anonymous flying object, he described a sacred vessel whose construction had been disclosed by higher powers. The engineering details therefore served a religious narrative rather than replacing it.[Project 1947]project1947.comProject 1947PROJECT 1947 - Bill Chalker - Australian Historical UFO Encounters…

This explains several otherwise puzzling features of the manuscript:

  • the craft is admired as a beautiful vessel before it is recognised as an aircraft;
  • the guide is consistently described as a spirit;
  • the revelation carries moral as well as technical significance;
  • Birmingham repeatedly links the machine with God’s purpose rather than with unknown visitors.

These elements distinguish the account from twentieth-century UFO reports, where witnesses usually claim to observe unexplained objects without interpreting them as biblical symbols.

What this means for New South Wales UFO history

Within the broader history of unusual aerial reports in New South Wales, Birmingham’s account remains important because it predates powered flight while describing what appears, on the surface, to be an advanced flying machine. However, the language of the manuscript shows that removing its religious framework produces a misleading reading.

Later UFO writers understandably focused on the detailed description of the craft, its enclosed structure, the pilot house and the engineering papers. Yet Birmingham himself consistently treated these features as parts of a divine revelation centred on an ark, not simply on an unexplained aircraft.[Project 1947]project1947.comProject 1947PROJECT 1947 - Bill Chalker - Australian Historical UFO Encounters…

For that reason, historians generally regard the Parramatta vision as occupying a distinctive place between Victorian religious experience and later UFO traditions. It illustrates how nineteenth-century witnesses could combine biblical imagery, spiritual communication and technological imagination into a single coherent story. The term ark is therefore not decorative language but a key to Birmingham’s own understanding of what he believed he had witnessed.
