Did a UFO Really Stop a Car Near St Helens?
The St Helens report gained credibility from prompt interviews and named witnesses, but no instrument or immediate vehicle examination proved an external cause.

Introduction
The St Helens car-stop case is one of Tasmania’s better-known vehicle-interference reports, but it is not strong evidence that a UFO physically disabled a car. On the night of 16 September 1974, a woman from the Richards family and two young daughters reportedly experienced radio static, a brightened sky, total electrical failure, an overwhelming roar, bodily sensations and a choking smell while driving north of St Helens. The case deserves attention because named witnesses were interviewed promptly and an investigator visited the family within days. Yet its central weakness is equally important: nobody described seeing a clearly defined craft during the stoppage, no instrument recorded an unusual field or sound, and the vehicle was not preserved for an immediate forensic examination. What survives is a detailed and apparently sincere account, not proof that an external object stopped the car.
The Richards family’s reported encounter
At about 9.15 pm, the Richards family’s 1968 manual Toyota Crown was travelling along Ansons Bay Road, several miles north of St Helens. The mother was driving with daughters aged eight and five. According to the investigation report later reproduced by Australian UFO researcher Keith Basterfield, the night was dark with light drizzle, the family had travelled from Launceston and the younger child was asleep. The first reported anomaly was static on the car radio. Almost immediately, the sky ahead appeared brightly illuminated. As the Toyota crossed a bridge and began climbing a gentle incline, it lost power and stopped. The headlights, dashboard illumination, heater and radio were all said to have gone out. The account then became more unusual. The driver and her elder daughter reported a deafening, vibrating noise, compared by the mother to dozens of large jet aircraft. They also described painful, shock-like sensations passing through their bodies. A strange smell then seemed to fill the car, making breathing difficult. The mother and elder child got out, removed the younger girl and fled along the road. They reportedly reached the home of Harvey Chappel roughly two miles away at about 9.45 pm. Chappel, described in the investigation as a mechanic, returned to the Toyota with his brother and the driver. The car then started without difficulty. Its bonnet was hot and the radiator contained little water, suggesting that it might have boiled or overheated, although Chappel reportedly found no immediate mechanical explanation for the complete episode. This sequence is dramatic, but the wording matters. The witnesses reported light in the sky, noise and physical effects; the surviving account does not say that they saw a structured object hovering over the Toyota. The classification of the event as a UFO car-stop case therefore rests on the assumption that the light and the vehicle failure shared an extraordinary external cause.
Why the early investigation gave the story weight
Roger Brooks of the Tasmania UFO Investigation Centre, or TUFOIC, visited the Richards family’s remote property on 21 September, five days after the reported encounter. Brooks was identified as a senior English master at St Marys District School rather than an anonymous enthusiast. That promptness is one of the case’s strongest features. Memories had not been left to develop for years before being documented, and parts of the narrative were potentially checkable. The sister-in-law reportedly confirmed that the travellers seemed well shortly before departing. Chappel could speak to the driver’s condition, the hot bonnet and the car’s successful restart. A second mechanic reportedly inspected it the next day. Brooks nevertheless distinguished sincerity from perfect accuracy. His conclusion was that the mother had been badly frightened by something, while acknowledging that precise details might have become confused. He specifically questioned why the sleeping child had not fully awakened during a noise described as almost unbearable. There was also some limited supporting testimony beyond the car. The husband, waiting at home, reportedly noticed lights in the sky and heard a distant roar, although he initially assumed the sound came from his wife’s arrival. Because his observation was made from another location and was not precisely measured or synchronised, it cannot securely connect the distant light and sound with the vehicle stoppage. The case entered the wider UFO literature through TUFOIC reports, newspaper coverage and later catalogues. These sources repeatedly trace their information back to Brooks’s investigation rather than to several fully independent inquiries. What the vehicle evidence can and cannot prove
The Toyota’s apparent recovery is often presented as mysterious: it stopped completely during the experience, then started when people returned. Yet intermittent faults are difficult to eliminate after the fact, particularly when a vehicle is no longer under the same load, temperature and road conditions. Battery connections, charging-system components, ignition wiring and switches can produce temporary failures that disappear before inspection. A hot engine or cooling problem can likewise produce power loss without leaving an obvious electrical short circuit. No surviving technical report appears to provide battery voltage, charging output, coolant temperature, ignition continuity or component test results. Statements that mechanics “could find nothing wrong” are useful testimony, but they are not equivalent to a documented diagnostic examination. It is unclear exactly which parts were tested, whether the inspection occurred with the engine hot, or whether wiring and battery terminals were dismantled and checked.
The low radiator water and hot bonnet offer a conventional lead, although not a complete solution. Overheating could explain loss of engine power and distressing smells, but it does not readily account for every reported feature, especially the illuminated sky, loud external-seeming noise and shock-like sensations. Conversely, the unusual sensations do not prove exposure to an electromagnetic field. The reported radio static also has limited diagnostic value. Radio interference may arise from a vehicle’s own ignition and electrical equipment, nearby transmitters, power infrastructure or atmospheric sources. It becomes persuasive evidence of an extraordinary external influence only when the interference is measured, independently correlated with a visible object or reproduced under controlled conditions. None of those safeguards was available at St Helens.
Most importantly, the vehicle was apparently returned to normal use. There was no secured chain of custody, laboratory examination, recorded magnetic alteration or preserved damaged component. Later investigators therefore had no physical sample capable of distinguishing an unusual external effect from an intermittent mechanical fault.
Stress, illness and the limits of witness interpretation
The driver’s distress was plainly central to Brooks’s assessment. She was reportedly shaking and difficult to control when she reached the nearby house. Afterwards, she described facial numbness, swelling, difficulty walking and a small red mark above an eyebrow. These symptoms should neither be dismissed nor treated as evidence of radiation or electrical exposure without medical documentation. Acute fear can intensify pain, breathing difficulty, tingling, trembling and the perception of noise or bodily vibration. Exhaust fumes, an overheating engine, electrical insulation, coolant or another smell from a distressed vehicle could also have increased panic. The surviving sources do not provide a doctor’s diagnosis, toxicology findings or clinical measurements that would identify the cause.
Fatigue may also have mattered. The family had completed a substantial journey, one child was very tired, and the event occurred at night in drizzle on a relatively isolated road. Those conditions do not invalidate testimony, but they reduce the reliability of estimates involving duration, brightness, distance and the sequence of rapidly unfolding sensations. A later online comment, posted in the name of the elder daughter, stated that her memory remained vivid and corrected the commonly reproduced location, placing the incident about two kilometres farther north near a bridge locally called “The Branch”. This may improve the geographical record, but a comment made more than four decades later cannot independently verify the physical cause. Did later reporting strengthen the UFO claim?
Later reporting preserved the story but did not materially strengthen its evidential foundation. The principal details still come from Brooks’s 1974 interviews. Subsequent catalogues condense or repeat that material, sometimes varying the mother’s first name or the precise location. Reports of other unusual lights and vehicle incidents in north-eastern Tasmania during the same period make the St Helens story part of a notable local cluster. They may explain why the case acquired such prominence within Tasmanian UFO history. They do not, however, establish that all the reports had a common cause. The fairest assessment is that the Richards family probably underwent a frightening roadside incident and that Brooks documented it more carefully than many civilian UFO reports of the era. The named witnesses, rapid interviews and attempted vehicle checks make the case stronger than a late, anonymous anecdote. But the absence of a clearly observed craft, contemporaneous measurements and demonstrable vehicle damage prevents the story from showing that a UFO stopped the Toyota.
Within Tasmania’s UFO history, St Helens is therefore best labelled unresolved but evidentially weak. An intermittent vehicle or overheating fault, combined with an unusual light, noise, fumes and acute stress, remains plausible. An external aerial source cannot be conclusively excluded, but the surviving evidence does not identify one—and later retellings have added familiarity rather than proof.
