What Did South Australia's Missing UFO Evidence Contain?

Introduction
One of the biggest limitations in South Australia’s official UFO archive is not that key files are classified, but that some of the material they originally referenced is no longer available. Several surviving records, particularly those connected with the Woomera weapons range during the early 1950s, refer to accompanying diagrams, radar plots, maps, technical sketches or operational records that are now absent, detached from the file or impossible to match with certainty. This missing evidence does not prove that extraordinary information was removed, nor does it invalidate the surviving reports. Instead, it creates an evidential gap. Modern readers are often left assessing investigators’ summaries rather than the underlying technical material from which those summaries were drawn. For a project centred on South Australia’s official UFO records, understanding those missing attachments is therefore just as important as understanding the reports themselves.
The absent radar diagram in the 1954 file
The best-known example comes from the Woomera radar-visual incident of 5 May 1954, preserved in National Archives file D174 (control symbol SA5281). The surviving documents describe a radar operator detecting an unidentified target while an experienced observer simultaneously watched an object through binoculars. However, the written account also indicates that supporting technical material once accompanied the report. References have been made to a radar trace or diagram illustrating the target’s movement, yet this material is not available with the digitised file used by most researchers today. Without that original plotting sheet, several important questions cannot be answered independently.
For example, researchers cannot now verify:
- exactly how the radar track was drawn;
- whether the timing marks were recorded automatically or entered manually;
- how bearings and distances were measured on the display;
- whether the reported course changes were obvious on the original plot or resulted from later interpretation;
- whether the radar presentation contained ambiguities or alternative explanations that are not evident in the written summary.

Why maps, plots and logs matter
Technical attachments are often more valuable than narrative summaries because they preserve information that later authors may unintentionally simplify.
In military and aviation investigations from the 1950s, supporting documents commonly included:
- radar plotting sheets;
- range maps showing bearings and flight paths;
- aircraft movement records;
- weather observations;
- equipment operating logs;
- instrument calibration notes;
- sketches prepared immediately after the observation.
These records allow later investigators to reconstruct what happened independently rather than accepting someone’s conclusions at face value.
For example, a radar plot can reveal whether a target moved smoothly, appeared intermittently, produced multiple returns or might have reflected atmospheric effects. A range map can show whether the object’s reported position overlapped with missile tests, aircraft corridors or known tracking exercises. Equipment logs may reveal maintenance issues, abnormal radar behaviour or operational limitations on the day of the sighting.
When those attachments disappear, later analysts lose the ability to test alternative explanations using the same evidence available to the original investigators.
Missing records do not necessarily imply deliberate removal
It is tempting to interpret absent attachments as evidence of suppression, but archival practice offers several more ordinary explanations.
Government files assembled during the 1950s often passed between departments, were copied repeatedly and were reorganised before permanent archiving. Large maps, folded diagrams and photographic prints were sometimes stored separately because they exceeded standard file sizes. Australia’s National Archives also inherited records from multiple agencies whose filing systems changed over time. Consequently, surviving files occasionally contain references such as “attached diagram”, “see enclosure” or similar wording even though the enclosure itself no longer accompanies the digitised record.
This means that a missing attachment is evidence of an incomplete archive, not evidence by itself that sensitive information was deliberately withheld.
How missing attachments limit later conclusions
The absence of original technical material affects both sceptical and pro-UFO interpretations.
Those who regard the Woomera reports as unusually strong cannot demonstrate that the original radar evidence fully supported later descriptions because the underlying plotting material is unavailable.
Equally, sceptics cannot confidently show that the reported radar track resulted from equipment error, plotting mistakes or misinterpretation because the same technical evidence is also missing.
The result is an unusual evidential balance:
- The witness testimony survives. Statements from observers remain available.
- The official investigation survives. Correspondence shows that responsible personnel considered the reports worthy of recording.
- Some technical conclusions survive. Speed estimates, bearings and descriptions remain in the written record.
- Part of the supporting evidence does not survive. The missing attachments prevent independent reconstruction of the observations.
This means the surviving documentation can establish what officials believed they observed and how they investigated it, but not necessarily whether every technical conclusion would withstand modern review.
What the missing evidence probably contained
Based on standard military reporting practices of the period and references within surviving files, the absent material most likely consisted of routine technical documentation rather than dramatic revelations.
It may have included:
- radar plotting diagrams;
- hand-drawn movement traces;
- bearing and distance calculations;
- range overlays;
- operational notes from radar personnel;
- supporting sketches or photographs;
- administrative routing sheets linking the report to other defence files.
Any one of these could clarify how investigators reached their conclusions. None, however, should automatically be assumed to contain proof of an extraordinary craft.
The wider lesson for South Australia’s UFO archive
The missing attachments illustrate why South Australia’s official UFO history must be read with caution. The archive preserves genuine government interest in unusual aerial reports around strategically important sites such as Woomera, but it does not preserve every piece of evidence originally collected.
That distinction matters. The surviving files remain valuable historical records showing how defence personnel documented unexplained observations, yet they are incomplete datasets rather than complete case files.
